With a rousing, "Ow!" and spirited "Shamon!" Michael Jackson has moonwalked his way to become the biggest superstar of the '80s and ‘90s.

With an electrifying stage presence, the biggest selling album of all time (Thriller - 47m copies worldwide) and a somewhat eccentric private life, Jacko is the quintessential pop star. Hard to believe he's celebrating his 50th birthday this month!

To coincide with his birthday, Smooth Radio has collated stories from the people who have known Michael.

In 1977, Jonathan Morrish (head of Sony UK) witnessed an ashen faced Daily Mirror journalist struggling to get an interview with Michael and his brothers when they were misbehaving and hyperactive.

When a big Sony Music presentation was held for Michael at a big hotel in London, years later, Terrie Doherty, was stunned when he picked her out of a line-up. Initially he had just stood at the door, staring from one end of the row to the other before picking out Terri and kissing her on both cheeks, nearly resulting in her fainting.

In a career spanning from 1964 to today, Michael has picked up thousands of devoted fans. Perhaps none more so than 20-year-old Jeanette Boardman from Leigh in Wigan.

At just 20 years old Jeanette has already seen Michael three times and told us that each occasion was an ‘amazing experience' and that he was ‘lovely'.

And Jeanette, who lives in Leigh, in Wigan, has also made a more permanant gesture to her hero in the form of a pair of eye-catching tattoes devoted to Michael. On her arm a large tattoo reads ‘Michael Jackson', while a tattoo on her back was designed by Jeanette herself.

She said: "The other is on my back, which I designed myself. It is of his eyes and in one eye Michael is dancing and in the other eye are his kids, dancing."
