Serena Not So Sereen

One thing which offen gets discussed on the Real Sports Phone In is the behaviour of some sports fans towards the teams they follow. Now and again the subject of players themselves crops up and you sometimes wonder how impressionable young people then feel towards copying their heroes, and think they can get away with it.
Serena Williams outburst in her semi final against Kim Clijsters at the US Open was some sort of bizarre reaction to her belief that she had a “god given right” to be in the final. Yes she works hard, incredibly hard at her game, but probably not as hard as other players simply because she’s that good. Yes she’s a role model to millions of kids and tennis supporters, yes, she’s put womens tennis back on the map over the past few years with her sister and finally, yes, she’s a champion.
But, sometimes in life and in sport no matter how good you are at what you do, you’ll come up against someone on a given day who’ll be that bit better than you. And that is something Serena has to accept. I suspect it was that realisation which, when met with a call from a line official for a foot fault tipped her over the edge. But being a professional tennis player brings with it responsibilities, just like in any other sport. Serena forgot about those at the weekend, when she should have carried on with her game.
I’m sure this row will rumble on for some time to come as will the one concerning Emmanuel Adebayor.
What he did on Saturday was as distasteful as it was unprofessional, a thoroughly gross act of celebrating a goal in front of his former supporters, and that’s not even taking into account his alleged stamp on Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie.
The FA, just like the WTA will now investigate and in due course reveal their findings and judgements. Let’s just hope that both governing bodies have the bottle to do the right thing and set punishments down that will make the next Serena Williams or Adebayor think twice before abusing authority and taunting supporters.
Its Bish and Leighton tonight from 6 taking your calls on the Real Sports Phone In,we’ll have results of Beat The Pundits too. Will there be a forefeit yet again for our pundits to carry out? Find out later.
